Dominican Republic PLD grapples with hunger concerns and presidential race

Former president and PLD leader Danilo Medina accused the current administration of failing to curb rising food prices, saying many Dominican families now eat only two meals a day and some only one. He pointed to sharp increases in staples such as rice, chicken, pork, beef, eggs and plantains and questioned the lack of a concrete plan to eliminate hunger.

At the same time, PLD presidential hopeful Francisco Javier García is strengthening his campaign for the 2028 election. He welcomed former councilor Aníbal Villamán back into the party and held meetings with provincial leaders and diaspora representatives, signaling expanding support and organizational consolidation ahead of the party’s internal selection process.
