Dominican Republic PLD urges legal scrutiny of October consultation and penal code draft

PLD presidential hopeful Francisco Domínguez Brito said the party must hold a Political Committee meeting to verify that the October consultation complies with legal requirements and the Supreme Electoral Tribunal's jurisprudence. He warned that the PLD cannot act outside the law and expressed confidence that the process will select a credible candidate.

PLD secretary general Johnny Pujols called for a deep review of the draft Penal Code, citing ambiguities in articles on ultraje, discrimination and "extortionary defamation" that could jeopardise freedom of expression, legal certainty and business security. He urged Congress to incorporate observations from civil society, jurists and other sectors before approving the legislation, stressing the risk that vague language poses to public liberties.
