The Ministry of Public Health in the Dominican Republic confirmed that nine suspected mpox (viruela símica) cases were identified in a police barracks in the province of San Cristóbal. Two detainees tested positive by RT‑PCR, while the remaining seven are under clinical evaluation.

Health authorities activated a Rapid Response Team (Grupo de Respuesta Rápida) that includes the Directorate General of Epidemiology (DIGEPI), the Vice‑Ministry of Risk Management and Environmental Health, and the San Cristóbal provincial health directorate. The team is conducting active case finding, clinical assessment, sample collection, contact tracing and sanitation inspections.

The Minister of Public Health, Víctor Atallah, emphasized that the outbreak is confined to the barracks, that the identified variant is the least aggressive and not imported, and that there is no evidence of community transmission. Ongoing epidemiological surveillance will continue until all contacts are cleared and pending test results are received. The National Health Service (SNS) has also prepared hospitals nationwide to manage any possible mpox cases.
