Dominican Republic police face scrutiny over rising shootout fatalities
The Dominican Republic's National Police is facing scrutiny over a rise in fatalities during alleged shootouts. Data from the Joint Task Force indicates that 49 people died in such incidents during September 2026. While National Police Director Maj. Gen. Ernesto Rodríguez García maintains that those killed were repeat offenders with criminal records, an investigation by Diario Libre found a significant discrepancy: of the 182 people killed by police so far in 2026, only three were actually on the institution's official wanted list.
Minister of Interior and Police Faride Raful addressed the violence, stating that these shootouts do not constitute a State policy and emphasizing that the ongoing police reform prioritizes human rights and the proportional use of force. Despite these assurances, reports indicate high levels of violence, with approximately 17 men killed in shootouts in a single week.
In response to calls for surrender from police leadership, more than 90 individuals sought by authorities have surrendered voluntarily in September. Meanwhile, the National Police reported a total of 53,877 pending arrest and capture orders in its system, including 2,681 related to homicide cases.
