Dominican Republic protests police custody deaths, La Zurza shooting
Protests broke out in San Cristóbal and Santo Domingo Este after the deaths of Miguel Antonio Lucas Paredes and Rawel Sierra, both linked to police actions. Their families demand a transparent investigation and justice, while police officials say they are awaiting autopsy results.
Another detainee, Miguel Antonio Lucas Valenzuela, died following several days in custody at a San Cristóbal police station, with relatives alleging he received no medical care. Police again say the case is under forensic investigation.
Separately, the National Police reported a shooting in the La Zurza district of the National District. A patrol encountered armed suspects assaulting a family using a ride‑hailing vehicle; police say the suspects opened fire on the patrol, not the officers. No passengers were injured.
