Dominican Republic police operations result in 22 deaths in early October
The Dominican Republic's National Police have recorded 22 deaths during alleged confrontations with law enforcement in the first 11 days of October. This follows a record-breaking September that saw 55 deaths. The deceased, primarily aged between 19 and 44, were reportedly being sought for various crimes, including homicide and aggravated robbery.
In response to the rising number of fatalities, the Attorney General's Office (PGR) has declined requests for specific statistics regarding the investigation of these deaths. The PGR cited the confidentiality of criminal investigations and personal data protection laws, stating that disclosing such information could compromise ongoing judicial processes.
President Luis Abinader has previously urged individuals with outstanding arrest warrants to surrender to authorities, warning that those who do not will face police intervention.
