Dominican Republic political evolution and current party challenges

The political landscape of the Dominican Republic has undergone significant transformations since 1966, moving from authoritarian competition toward a more mature procedural democracy through various constitutional reforms.

Key historical milestones include the 1994 Pact for Democracy, which introduced the prohibition of consecutive reelection, established a second-round voting system, and separated presidential from congressional elections. Subsequent reforms in 2002, 2010, and 2015 addressed presidential terms and reelection models, including the creation of the Constitutional Court and the Superior Electoral Court.

Currently, the governing PRM party faces challenges regarding administrative efficiency and the upcoming process of selecting a presidential candidate.
