Dominican Republic poultry production sufficient for Christmas demand
Eddy Alcántara, executive director of Pro Consumidor, has confirmed that the Dominican Republic has sufficient poultry production to meet consumer demand during the upcoming Christmas holidays. He noted that chicken prices have remained stable over the last ten months, with the price per pound ranging between RD$79 and RD$84 in markets and supermarkets nationwide.
Alcántara attributed this stability to high national production levels and denied claims of massive imports. He stated that the Ministry of Agriculture has actually reduced the issuance of import permits for poultry this year. To support local producers against the risks of overproduction, the government has implemented mechanisms such as the pignoration of chicken meat, allowing producers to use stored products as collateral for financing.
Additionally, Alcántara reported that several basic food items have seen price decreases over the last two months, despite international economic pressures.
