Dominican Republic poultry supply stabilizes ahead of holiday season
The Dominican poultry industry reports a robust supply of chicken, with national production averaging 21.5 million birds per month. This abundance has led to lower market prices in Greater Santo Domingo, with poultry retailing between RD$70 and RD$85 per pound in various markets and butcher shops.
To manage market surpluses and ensure stability during the Christmas season, the Ministry of Agriculture announced an intervention to pledge eight million pounds of chicken for temporary storage. This measure aims to support poultry farmers and prevent price fluctuations during periods of high demand.
Additionally, the Institute of Price Stabilization (INESPRE) is facilitating access to affordable protein through its mobile warehouses and producer markets, offering frozen chicken at prices ranging from RD$33 to RD$50 per pound. Industry representatives, including the Dominican Poultry Association (ADA) and the Association of Independent Poultry Producers (ASOPROIN), have affirmed that current production levels are sufficient to meet holiday demand.
