Dominican Republic leaders warn of rising cost of living and inflation
Political figures and economic analysts in the Dominican Republic are raising alarms regarding the rising cost of living. Haivanjoe Ng Cortiñas, Secretary of Economic Affairs for the Fuerza del Pueblo, reported that while the national economy has grown, this progress has not reached the majority of citizens. He noted that between August 2020 and July 2026, food inflation accumulated a 48% increase, while school supplies rose by approximately 32%.
Francisco Javier García, a PLD presidential aspirant, echoed these concerns, stating that families face significant sacrifices to afford basic necessities like uniforms and books. He criticized the government's assistance as insufficient for low-income households. Similarly, Johnny Pujols, Secretary General of the PLD, emphasized that the party will continue to provide opposition based on these socio-economic grievances, noting high levels of public uncertainty regarding the country's future.
In response to broader social and educational needs, President Luis Abinader has overseen several initiatives, including the delivery of over 36,000 technological scholarships through ITLA and the inauguration of a multi-use facility at the Mercedes Consuelo Matos Polytechnic. Additionally, the Association of Dominican Teachers (ADP) has announced national demonstrations to demand the payment of salary incentives and retroactive benefits.
