Dominican Republic advances energy infrastructure and grid modernization

The Dominican Republic is undergoing significant energy infrastructure developments. President Luis Abinader recently inspected the construction of the Generadora San Felipe Andrés I in Boca Chica. This natural gas combined-cycle thermoelectric plant is 92% complete and is expected to enter operation in May 2027, contributing 467 MW—approximately 13% of the national demand—to the interconnected electrical system.

Simultaneously, utility provider Edenorte is modernizing regional grids. In Samaná, a new 37 MVA transformer is being installed to replace a 14 MVA unit, tripling capacity to meet growing tourism and residential demand. In the Dajabón region, Edenorte has launched an RD$11 million project to renew medium-voltage networks in Loma de Cabrera and Restauración to improve service stability.

Despite these investments, the energy sector faces scrutiny. Political figures have noted financial deficits and high physical and monetary losses in distribution, which some attribute to a lack of policy continuity. Additionally, the government is advancing exploration for rare earth elements in Pedernales, with official declarations of resources expected in November.
