Dominican Republic: PRM internal tensions rise amid presidential race

Political maneuvering is intensifying within the Dominican Republic’s Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) as members prepare for the 2028 presidential cycle. Recent polling by ACD Media indicates that Tourism Minister David Collado leads the PRM presidential preferences with 39.4% among the general population and 49.9% among party members, followed by Carolina Mejía at 18.3%.

Internal friction has emerged between supporters of Collado and Mejía. Jesús ‘Chú’ Vásquez, a consul general aligned with Mejía, publicly questioned Collado’s political legitimacy within the party, while Eduardo Sanz Lovatón defended the minister, calling for unity to support the legacy of President Luis Abinader. Meanwhile, other figures like Adán Peguero and Wellington Arnaud are actively building coalitions to strengthen their respective positions.

Separately, Guido Gómez Mazara, president of Indotel and a PRM aspirant, has denounced a smear campaign against him. Mazara claims the campaign is funded by telecommunications sector interests seeking to overturn recent spectrum licensing decisions involving Viettel and Claro Dominicana. He expressed readiness to participate in political debates to strengthen internal party democracy.
