Dominican Republic authorities launch crackdown on prison contraband and migration corruption

Authorities in the Dominican Republic are conducting several high-profile operations involving law enforcement, migration, and the prison system.

The General Directorate of Penitentiary and Correctional Services (DGSPC) has launched a national operation to eradicate illicit items in prisons. Following the seizure of cell phones and prohibited substances at the CCR Las Parras facility, several inmates, including gang leader Ángel David Medina Paredes, have been placed in individual isolation. The DGSPC warned it will prosecute any lawyers, family members, or staff involved in smuggling contraband.

In migration news, the General Directorate of Migration (DGM) reported the deportation of 3,126 undocumented foreigners during a weekend of operations in October, with high numbers of detentions in Dajabón and Santo Domingo. Additionally, a migration inspector, Esteban Nohassis Mogena González, was placed in preventive detention for allegedly accepting bribes to allow passengers with judicial impediments to exit the country via Las Américas International Airport.

In other legal matters, a woman is facing three months of preventive detention for allegedly drugging a man to steal high-value items, and prosecutors are seeking detention for a suspect involved in the robbery of actor Kenny Grullón. Meanwhile, the Dominican passport service has expanded electronic passport availability to 17 of its 19 offices.
