Dominican Republic proposes 2027 budget for political parties at half the legal requirement
In the Dominican Republic, the government's 2027 budget proposal allocates RD$1,750.9 million to political parties, which represents approximately 0.12% of national income. This amount is roughly half of the RD$3,498.7 million that would be required under Article 224 of the Organic Law of the Electoral Regime 20-23.
The law mandates that the government transfer 0.5% of national income during election years and 0.25% in other years. This follows a pattern of budget reductions; in 2026, the government also allocated only half of the legally required amount for political parties, a move that previously drew criticism and opposition from political organizations regarding their ability to cover campaign expenses.
