Dominican Republic pushes to require teaching career in private universities

Former presidents and ex‑secretaries of the Dominican Association of Professors (ADP) urged that all private universities in the Dominican Republic establish a formal teaching career, citing constitutional article 63 and the need for stable salaries, health insurance and pensions. They highlighted that, aside from the public Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo, none of the 57 private higher‑education institutions currently meet this requirement, and warned that dismissals of teachers seeking union representation undermine quality education.

At the same forum, education consultant Fulcar presented a broader reform proposal called “Education for a Better Life,” calling for a new social contract and a 12‑pillar strategic framework that emphasizes inclusion, innovation, quality, civic values and lifelong learning. Fulcar argued that past reforms have improved institutions but not the underlying paradigm, and advocated a long‑term vision to make education a driver of personal and national development.
