Dominican Republic expands school infrastructure and supplies for 2026‑27
The Instituto Nacional de Bienestar Estudiantil (INABIE) began delivering 267,544 school kits to students in the Eastern region for the 2026‑27 academic year. The kits, which include backpacks, notebooks, pencils, uniforms and shoes, are part of a national programme that will distribute 1,806,872 kits to 6,577 public schools, reaching more than 1.4 million families and saving each household between RD$3,864 and RD$5,433.
The Dirección de Infraestructura Escolar accelerated the construction of 66 new classrooms in El Seibo and 14 schools in La Romana, along with two sports roofs that will serve over 2,600 students. The effort is intended to bring the total of new classrooms nationwide to 1,500 by August 2026.
The Asociación Dominicana de Profesores (ADP) warned of mobilisations on 4‑5 August demanding the payment of teacher incentive bonuses and retroactive amounts tied to the performance‑evaluation system.
Supérate, the national social‑protection agency, reported that it supports 33,012 families in La Romana, Villa Hermosa and Guaymate, including a monthly RD$6,000 subsidy for 295 families with children with disabilities.
The Ministry of Education (MINERD) kept an operational presence in all 18 regional directorates and 122 school districts, supervising infrastructure, distributing kits, coordinating enrollment and training staff ahead of the school year start on 24 August 2026.
