Dominican Republic rolls out 267,000 school kits and accelerates new classroom construction for 2026‑27
The Instituto Nacional de Bienestar Estudiantil (INABIE) began distributing 267,544 school kits to students in the Eastern region for the 2026‑27 school year. The kits, which include backpacks, notebooks, pencils, uniforms and other supplies, are expected to save each family between RD$3,864 and RD$5,433. Nationwide, the government plans to provide 1,806,872 kits to public schools, reaching more than 1.4 million families.
The Dirección de Infraestructura Escolar (DIE) is speeding up the construction of new classrooms in El Seibo and La Romana. In El Seibo, 66 classrooms are being built across 15 schools, and two sports roofs are being added, benefitting over 2,600 students. In La Romana, 14 schools are undergoing expansion under the “Aulas 24/7‑365” programme, contributing to a national target of 1,500 new classrooms by August 2026.
The Asociación Dominicana de Profesores (ADP) announced protests on 4‑5 August demanding payment of teacher incentive bonuses and retroactive amounts tied to the performance‑evaluation system. The union also formally requested that the Ministry of Education disclose the locations of the 1,000 new classrooms promised for the upcoming school year.
The social‑protection agency Supérate reported that it supports 33,012 families in La Romana, Villa Hermosa and Guaymate, including 295 families with disabled children who receive a monthly RD$6,000 subsidy. The agency’s programmes aim to reduce extreme poverty and strengthen household resilience.
