Dominican Republic withdraws diplomatic mission from Nicaragua
The Dominican Republic has withdrawn its diplomatic representation from Nicaragua due to concerns regarding democratic freedoms and political rights. Consequently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIREX) has transferred consular services and assistance for Dominican nationals residing in Nicaragua to its missions in San José, Costa Rica, and San Pedro Sula, Honduras.
While consular assistance remains available through these new channels, MIREX has announced a temporary suspension of judicial notifications and other legal procedural acts directed at individuals or entities domiciled in Nicaragua, citing ‘reasons of force majeure’. This suspension will remain in effect until conditions allow for the restoration of these services.
Separately, Foreign Minister Víctor Bisonó addressed the situation of approximately 20 Dominican citizens identified as being in Russia. These individuals reportedly traveled to Russia under technical work contracts but have since been incorporated into activities related to the conflict in Ukraine. Bisonó noted that because these citizens signed voluntary contracts in both Spanish and Russian, the Dominican state faces legal limitations in facilitating their return, though the government has formally communicated these cases to Russian authorities.
