Dominican Republic re-elected to UN Human Rights Council

The Dominican Republic has been re-elected as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2027-2029 term. The election took place during the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Representing the Latin American and Caribbean Group (GRULAC), the Dominican Republic was elected alongside Brazil and Uruguay. Other nations selected for the 47-member council include Germany, Japan, Ukraine, and several African and Asian states.

Foreign Minister Víctor 'Ito' Bisonó stated that the reelection affirms international confidence in the country’s commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and the protection of human rights. He emphasized that the nation will continue to advocate for the dignity of vulnerable populations and the interests of small island developing states.

Experts suggest that maintaining a seat on the council could enhance the country’s attractiveness to foreign investment, as transnational corporations often prioritize operating in nations that demonstrate respect for fundamental human rights and international institutional standards.
