Dominican Republic reports 347 pediatric scoliosis surgeries performed by Spine Center over four years
Over the past four years, the Spine Center in the Dominican Republic has surgically treated 347 pediatric patients for scoliosis. The team, led by Dr. Carlos Rodríguez Estévez, who is also president of the Sociedad Dominicana de Cirugía de Columna (SDCC), presented the data at the International Course of the Sociedad Ibero‑Latinoamericana de Columna (SILACO) during the 10th SDCC Congress.
The patients, aged 6 to 13, were predominantly girls (80%). Idiopathic juvenile and adolescent scoliosis accounted for 75% of the procedures, congenital scoliosis 12%, and neuromuscular scoliosis 13%. Dr. Rodríguez Estévez emphasized that early diagnosis and treatment by a specialized surgical team are crucial to prevent severe progression, chronic pain, and cardiopulmonary complications.
