Dominican Republic reports 75.8% drop in African swine fever cases
African swine fever (ASF) cases in the Dominican Republic have seen a significant decline in 2026. According to Abel Madera, Director General of Livestock, cases between January and July dropped by approximately 75.8%, falling from 472 recorded in the same period in 2025 to 118 this year.
The reduction was particularly notable during the months of June and July, which are traditionally high-incidence periods. In June, cases fell from 181 in 2025 to just 27 in 2026, an 85.1% decrease. As of August 20, only nine new cases have been reported, mostly involving backyard animals in Cotuí and Elías Piña.
The decline in disease prevalence has also led to a substantial reduction in government spending for producer compensations. The Ministry of Agriculture expects to allocate 60 million pesos this year, compared to 350 million pesos spent last year. Despite the progress, authorities warn that the virus remains a challenge due to its high resistance and the lack of an available vaccine.
