Dominican Republic reports high rates of technology-facilitated sexual abuse among adolescents

A study titled ‘Disrupting Harm’, conducted by UNICEF, ECPAT International, and INTERPOL, reveals that 23% of internet users aged 12 to 17 in the Dominican Republic experienced some form of technology-facilitated sexual violence in the last year. This figure represents approximately 272,000 adolescents and marks the highest prevalence among the 15 countries included in the research.

The investigation highlights that in 68% of these cases, the perpetrator was an acquaintance, such as a family member, friend, or partner. Digital platforms mentioned in connection with these incidents include WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and spaces related to video games.

Reporting remains critically low, with less than 1% of cases reported to the National Police and only 2% involving help lines or social workers. Barriers to reporting include a lack of knowledge regarding assistance mechanisms, shame, and fear of further complications.
