Dominican Republic health reports highlight infant mortality and pregnancy trends
Health and social indicators in the Dominican Republic show varying trends. According to the Fuerza del Pueblo, 14,688 children under one year old died in the last six years, with 78% occurring within the first 28 days of life. The organization also highlighted deficiencies in public hospitals, including shortages of space, supplies, and medical staff.
Data from the National Statistics Office (ONE) indicates that while overall adolescent pregnancy in the country is declining, there are divergent trends by nationality. During the first half of 2026, cases among Haitian adolescents dropped by 43.1%, whereas cases among Dominican adolescents rose by 3.7%. Authorities suggest migration controls in hospitals may have influenced the decrease in Haitian cases.
Maternal health trends also show a rise in cesarean sections, reaching 60.2% in Santiago Rodríguez and 47% nationwide in 2025. Additionally, President Luis Abinader issued Decree 676-26 to create the Servicio Nacional de Atención Residencial (Señar), a specialized body under the Ministry of the Presidency designed to manage residential care and protection programs for children and adolescents.
In the medical field, Ginecoide is organizing an international seminar focused on the prevention and management of preterm births.
