Dominican Republic road safety debt could reach RD$6.7 trillion
The road safety secretariat of the Fuerza del Pueblo (SESVIALFP) has warned that the socioeconomic debt caused by road accidents in the Dominican Republic could exceed RD$6.7 trillion (approximately US$108.4 billion) between 1911 and 2025. This estimate, based on economic reconstruction, highlights the long-term human and economic costs, including loss of life, disability, and decreased productivity.
In a related discussion on transportation challenges, experts at Universidad APEC (Unapec) emphasized the need to strengthen public transport and reduce reliance on private vehicles to improve urban mobility. The university highlighted that increasing congestion in major cities like Santo Domingo and Santiago, as well as tourist hubs like Punta Cana, requires better planning and improved road safety education to mitigate risks.
