Dominican Republic Secures $200 Million Road Safety Loan Amid $10 Billion in Recent Funding

The Dominican Republic Senate approved a US$200 million loan to fund a comprehensive road‑safety programme. The financing, managed by the National Institute of Transit and Land Transport (INTRANT) and the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC), will be allocated across three pillars:

- US$139 million for rehabilitating critical sections of major corridors such as the Sánchez Road, Las Americas Highway, Eastern Highway and Northeast Highway, including pavement repairs, signage upgrades and accessibility improvements. - US$20 million to enhance safety around 286 schools in Santo Domingo and Santiago, adding pedestrian crossings, speed‑reducers, ramps and safer walkways. - US$35 million for technology, education and victim‑assistance measures, covering traffic monitoring systems, a national motorcycle registry and modernisation of INTRANT courts.

These investments come as the Dominican Congress has approved more than US$10.4 billion in loans since 2020, targeting sectors like energy, sanitation, health and infrastructure. Recent major credit agreements include a US$400 million IBRD loan, a US$75 million CAF loan, and multiple multi‑billion‑dollar programmes funded by the Inter‑American Development Bank and the French Development Agency.
