Dominican Republic seeks Canadian investment in technology and manufacturing

Dominican Foreign Minister Víctor ‘Ito’ Bisonó is seeking to diversify economic relations with Canada by attracting investment into high-value sectors. During the Toronto Global Forum 2026, Bisonó proposed expanding cooperation beyond traditional mining and tourism into areas such as advanced manufacturing, medical devices, electronic components, aerospace, digital technologies, and clean energy.

Canada currently ranks as the second-largest source of foreign direct investment in the Dominican Republic, with an accumulated total of US$6.107 billion between 2010 and 2025. To strengthen these ties, Bisonó met with Ontario Premier Doug Ford, resulting in an agreement to host a Canadian commercial mission to the Dominican Republic in the first quarter of 2027. This mission aims to connect Ontario-based businesses with Dominican opportunities in energy, mining, and financial services, while also seeking to increase the export of Dominican products like rum and cigars to the Ontario market.
