Dominican Republic seeks to increase value of larimar production

The Dominican Republic is seeking to increase the domestic value of its larimar production by developing local industries, such as jewelry manufacturing, before the semi-precious stone is exported. Joel Santos, the Minister of Energy and Mines, stated that the country must transition from artisanal extraction toward a productive chain with greater transformation capacity.

Data indicates that larimar production is on an upward trend. In 2025, production reached 263,000 pounds, and in the first six months of 2026, 188,000 pounds had already been produced, representing an 81% increase compared to the same period the previous year. The government's goal is to ensure that the economic benefits of the mineral extend beyond raw extraction to include high-end finished products.
