Dominican Republic sees decline in exclusive breastfeeding as health ministry pushes maternal‑infant care improvements

The Dominican Republic’s National Health Service (SNS) reported a 39% reduction in maternal deaths during the first seven months of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025. At a meeting led by SNS executive director Dr. Julio Landrón, officials highlighted recent investments by President Luis Abinader that expanded hospital capacity, upgraded maternal and neonatal intensive care units, and equipped health centers with new medical devices.

During the national breastfeeding week, the Ministry of Health noted that 73% of newborns received exclusive breastfeeding at birth, but the rate fell to 56% by six months. Subsecretary of Public Health Dr. Alejandra Pizarro warned that maintaining exclusive breastfeeding is essential for child and maternal health, citing challenges such as low milk production, maternal fatigue, and insufficient family support.
