Dominican Republic sees restaurant growth and retail expansion

The restaurant sector in the Dominican Republic is experiencing significant growth, with new openings outstripping closures by a ratio of 2.5 to 1. According to Juan Bancalari, president of Asonahores, the birth rate for restaurants stands at 14.9% compared to a closure rate of 5.8%. This expansion is particularly evident in Santo Domingo, which saw 68 new establishments, as well as in Santiago, Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, and Jarabacoa.

This gastronomic dynamism supports the broader tourism industry, which contributes approximately 15% to the national GDP and generates over US$11 billion in foreign exchange.

In the retail sector, Merca Jumbo has expanded its presence in the eastern region with the opening of its 11th store in La Romana. The new 2,000-square-meter facility is expected to create 90 direct jobs and includes services such as a pharmacy, banking services, and an automated delivery option via its mobile app.
