Dominican Republic sees rising political disaffection as elites stay silent
Opinion pieces highlight a deepening crisis of political disaffection in the Dominican Republic. Historically, the business community and churches have shaped national debate, but they are now largely silent on pressing issues such as fiscal reform, energy policy and unemployment. Their retreat has left a vacuum that is being filled by media personalities and unqualified figures who dominate public discourse without offering substantive solutions.
At the same time, a wave of outsider candidates is presenting themselves as “not politicians,” promising to run the state like a private enterprise. These aspirants, many drawn from the business sector and digital influencers, claim they can deliver efficiency and honesty, yet they lack governing experience and may prioritize personal ambition over public interest. The public’s fatigue with traditional politicians fuels this trend, but the long‑term impact on governance remains uncertain.
