Dominican Republic Senate approves gambling regulation law

The Dominican Republic Senate has approved a comprehensive law to regulate gambling activities, including casinos, lottery banks, sports betting, and online platforms. The legislation, authored by Senators Félix Bautista and Pedro Catrain, aims to modernize the existing legal framework and unify various regulations into a single code.

A key component of the law is the creation of the Dirección General de Juegos de Azar (DGJA), an autonomous regulatory body tasked with supervising and inspecting the sector. The law introduces strict requirements for operators, such as mandatory identity verification for online bettors against Central Electoral Board (JCE) records and the establishment of a National Self-Exclusion Registry.

To protect sensitive environments, gambling establishments are prohibited from operating within 500 meters of schools, hospitals, churches, and government buildings. Additionally, the law mandates that 10% of all sector fines be directed toward gambling addiction prevention and treatment programs. Non-compliance with these regulations can lead to significant penalties, including fines, facility closures, loss of licenses, and prison sentences.
