Dominican Republic senators reintroduce labor and social security reforms

Legislators in the Dominican Republic are reintroducing efforts to reform the nation's Labor Code and Social Security Law. Senator Cristóbal Venerado Castillo has reintroduced a bill to modify the Labor Code, aiming to update legal frameworks regarding working hours, vacations, teleworking, and domestic labor to reflect modern economic and technological realities.

The proposal faces significant tension between business sectors, which seek updates to the current code, and labor unions, which fear the reform may erode existing worker rights. Senator Pedro Catrín has expressed support for maintaining current severance pay (cesantía) protections, noting that previous attempts to move severance discussions into the Social Security Law contributed to legislative delays.

Additionally, discussions regarding Social Security reform are being prioritized to address issues such as low pension amounts for long-term workers and the commercialization of health services. The Senate's Finance Commission is expected to play a key role in these upcoming legislative challenges.
