Dominican Republic social groups protest for water, health, and infrastructure
Social and community organizations in the Dominican Republic have launched protests and strike calls to demand improved public services and infrastructure.
In the eastern region, organizations from five provinces—La Altagracia, La Romana, El Seibo, Hato Mayor, and San Pedro de Macorís—marched in Higüey. Led by the Coordinadora Popular Nacional (CPN), the demonstrators demanded access to potable water, better healthcare services, dignified housing, and resolutions to land tenure conflicts. Participants noted that despite regional economic growth, local communities continue to face historical difficulties in accessing essential services.
In Salcedo, several popular movements, including MUPAS, MUBAS, COAS, and FUREGUVI, have called for a strike on the upcoming 20th and 21st. The groups cited unfulfilled government promises regarding 20 specific demands. These include addressing power outages and high billing from Edenorte, repairing local roads and sidewalks, completing unfinished public works, and regularizing water supply systems.
