Dominican Republic to add 2,000 MW of energy by 2028

The Dominican Republic plans to add more than 2,000 megawatts (MW) of firm electrical energy to its grid between this year and 2028. According to Minister of Energy and Mines Joel Santos Echaverría, this expansion will be driven largely by natural gas and private investment as part of a strategy to diversify the national energy matrix.

Renewable energy capacity has already grown from 555 MW to nearly 2,000 MW currently installed, with an additional 1,000 MW from new renewable projects expected by 2028. The transformation includes solar, wind, natural gas, and coal, while the use of fuel oil is progressively decreasing, though it remains necessary for system stability.

Technological advancements such as battery storage systems and pumped-storage hydroelectricity are also being integrated. Minister Santos noted that while this diversification offers significant benefits, it increases the complexity of managing the electrical system, requiring enhanced capabilities to ensure efficiency, security, and stability.
