Dominican Republic to approve national AI ethics code

Vice President Raquel Peña announced that President Luis Abinader will issue a decree in the coming days to approve the Dominican Republic's National Code of Ethics for Artificial Intelligence. The code, prepared by the Government Office of Information and Communication Technologies (OGTIC) together with the General Directorate of Government Ethics and Integrity, was drafted through a participatory process that involved more than 100 organisations from the public, private, academic and civil‑society sectors.

The initiative was presented at the Third Ministerial Summit on AI Ethics in Latin America and the Caribbean held in Santo Domingo, where officials highlighted alignment with UNESCO’s AI ethics principles and regional declarations such as the Santo Domingo Declaration and the 2026‑2027 AI Ethics Roadmap. The code aims to set clear rules for the responsible development, acquisition and implementation of AI technologies in the public sector, with workshops, consultations and surveys informing its final text before presidential promulgation.
