Dominican transport regulator drops Santiago fare hike after dialogue

The Instituto Nacional de Tránsito y Transporte Terrestre (Intrant) and the Central Nacional de Trabajadores del Transporte (CNTT) met in Santo Domingo, led by Intrant director executive Milton Morrison and CNTT president Juan Marte. The two parties agreed to set up a technical working group to examine the cost structure of passenger transport and to review operational conditions.

As a result, the announced increase in public‑transport fares for routes serving Santiago was cancelled until the study is completed. Both sides stressed that any future tariff changes must comply with Law 63‑17, which reserves authority to modify fares exclusively to Intrant. The government highlighted existing support measures such as fuel subsidies and the Bonogás/Bono Gas driver assistance program, noting that over 95 % of transport organisations opposed the hike.

The agreement reflects a broader commitment to dialogue and technical assessment before implementing policy changes that affect commuters across the Dominican Republic.
