Dominican Republic tribunal assigned to Jet Set nightclub tragedy trial
A collegiate tribunal in the National District of the Dominican Republic has been designated to preside over the trial regarding the Jet Set nightclub ceiling collapse. The First Collegiate Tribunal of the Criminal Chamber, led by Magistrate Esmirna Gisselle Méndez, will oversee the proceedings.
The case involves Antonio and Maribel Espaillat, the administrators of the establishment. Following a judicial decision by Judge Franny González Castillo on October 16, the legal classification of the charges was upgraded from involuntary manslaughter to voluntary homicide and injuries under the doctrine of 'dolo eventual' (eventual intent). Because this new classification carries higher potential penalties, the case must be heard by a collegiate tribunal rather than a single judge.
The tragedy occurred on the morning of April 8, 2025, in Santo Domingo, while merenguero Rubby Pérez was performing. The collapse resulted in 236 deaths and over one hundred injuries. The tribunal is expected to issue an order setting the hearing date and formally summon the involved parties in the coming days.
