FENTICOMMC defends construction workers' pension fund in Dominican Republic

The National Federation of Construction Industry Workers (FENTICOMMC), led by Pedro Julio Alcántara, has formally demanded that the National Council of Private Enterprise (CONEP) and the Dominican Association of Builders and Housing Developers (ACOPROVI) respect the rights of construction workers.

The federation is opposing initiatives aimed at transforming, eliminating, or altering the purpose of the Construction Workers' Pension Fund (FOPETCONS). FENTICOMMC clarified that FOPETCONS is a specific parafiscal regime rather than an ordinary contribution to the Dominican Social Security System, and should not be replaced by an AFP (Pension Fund Administrator).

Supported by the National Confederation of Union Unity (CNUS) and its president Rafael ‘Pepe’ Abreu, the movement emphasizes that FOPETCONS, established by Law 6-86, is vital for a sector characterized by temporary contracts and labor mobility. The fund provides pensions, retirements, and social services, including specialized medical care through the Eduardo Alexi Geriatrics and Specialties Center in Santo Domingo Este.
