Dominican Republic universities urged to expand role in national development

Each year Dominican Republic universities graduate thousands of doctors, engineers, lawyers, economists, psychologists, architects and other specialists, yet they are criticized for largely overlooking the country's pressing challenges. Academics argue that universities should move beyond merely training professionals and actively apply their research capacity to address issues such as violence, crime, traffic congestion, deteriorating education quality, public‑health threats, productivity, environmental concerns, technological innovation, labour‑market needs and urban mobility.

Commentators emphasize that the worth of public higher education cannot be captured solely by budgets or short‑term performance indicators. Universities generate knowledge, foster innovation, preserve culture, support sustainability and provide evidence‑based advice that underpins essential public services. They call for society and government to recognize this broader social return and to integrate university research more fully into policy‑making processes.
