Dominican Republic unveils territorial plan for Verón‑Punta Cana tourism zone

The Dominican government presented the Municipal Territorial Planning Plan (PMOT) for Verón‑Punta Cana, the country’s main tourism hub that receives over four million visitors a year. Ministers of the Presidency José Ignacio Paliza and Tourism David Collado highlighted the plan’s role in guiding land‑use decisions, protecting natural resources, and fostering sustainable economic growth.

The plan divides the district into seven zones—Uvero Alto–Macao, El Salado, Bávaro, Verón, Lagunas de Bávaro & El Caletón, Punta Cana, and Cap Cana—each with specific allocations for tourism, residential, agricultural, forest, and conservation uses. It aims to improve urban mobility, food security, disaster risk management, and overall quality of life as the area’s population and built environment expand rapidly.

Officials stressed that coordinated planning among government, local authorities, the private sector, and civil society is essential to avoid unorganized growth and to ensure a resilient, balanced development path for the region.
