Dominican Republic urges unity over Haiti crisis as opposition seeks coalition for 2028 elections

Wilson Gómez Ramírez, president of the Instituto Duartiano, said the Dominican Republic must reinforce national unity to face external threats, highlighting the deteriorating situation in Haiti where armed gangs and weak institutions create insecurity. He urged the international community to move from debate to concrete economic and military assistance for Haiti, linking the historic legacy of independence commemorated at the 165th anniversary of Francisco del Rosario Sánchez’s death with today’s challenges.

Miguel Vargas Maldonado, president of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD), called for a broad national opposition alliance to displace the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) in the 2028 elections. Speaking at a PRD assembly marking its 65th anniversary, he criticised the current administration for setbacks in agriculture, health and education, and urged political forces to unite to present an alternative government.

Both statements reflect heightened political rhetoric in the Dominican Republic concerning regional security and upcoming electoral battles.
