Dominican Republic women's basketball wins bronze and qualifies for 2027 AmeriCup

The Dominican Republic women's national basketball team secured the bronze medal at the 2026 Centrobasket Women’s Championship in Managua, Nicaragua, defeating the United States Virgin Islands 102‑69. The victory gave the Dominican Republic its tenth bronze in the tournament’s history and earned a spot at the 2027 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup alongside Puerto Rico, Mexico and host El Salvador. Forward Esmery Martínez led with 20 points, and veteran Yohanna Morton played her final game for the national side.

In a separate Centrobasket qualifier, Guyana fell 87‑71 to the United States Virgin Islands. Captain Joy Adams posted a tournament‑high 28 points, 15 rebounds and five steals, but the result left Guyana still winless in the group stage. The USVI’s balanced attack, with four players in double figures, secured their dominance in the match.
