Dominican Republic youth face high mortality from traffic and violence
A recent report on youth mortality in the Dominican Republic highlights a severe crisis regarding road safety and violent crime. Data from the Youth Bulletin No. 01 - 2026 indicates that individuals aged 15 to 35 are disproportionately affected by external causes of death between 2007 and 2024.
Young men are the most affected demographic, accounting for 89.16% of traffic accident fatalities in this age group. The report also notes that males represent 91.03% of homicides committed against young people and 82.20% of suicides. Traffic accidents involving motorcycles remain a frequent cause of death.
In response to the ongoing traffic chaos and rising violence, the National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (INTRANT) has appointed its fourth executive director to seek solutions for the country's road safety and public security challenges.
