Dominican Republic's INDRHI launches drought relief plan for Cenoví rice farmers
Olmedo Caba Romano, the executive director of the Instituto Nacional de Recursos Hidráulicos (INDRHI), met with rice producers in the La Marga community of Cenoví, Duarte Province, to discuss the severe drought caused by the El Niño phenomenon. He reaffirmed INDRHI’s commitment to provide permanent support to growers through coordination with agricultural organisations.
The agencies agreed to hold a technical meeting with the water authority CORAAVEGA to evaluate a proposed water‑line that would serve several communities. INDRHI will also deploy specialised hydrology teams to locate nearby aquifers, and plans are under way to construct a dam on the Jaya River, rehabilitate multiple lagoons for water storage, and repair minor drainage and irrigation channel crossings. President Luis Abinader and INDRHI were praised for their dialogue with producers, while the Camú River was noted as no longer able to supply additional water, prompting the search for new sources.
