Dominican Republic's Jet Set nightclub collapse cause contested by experts

On the early morning of 8 April 2025, the roof of the Jet Set nightclub in the Dominican Republic collapsed, killing 236 people and injuring more than 180. Two opposing forensic reports now dispute the cause.

The defense team for the victims’ families, represented by attorneys Antonio and Maribel Espaillat, argues the collapse resulted from long‑term construction defects and progressive deterioration of post‑tensioned steel wires, citing corrosion, hydrogen‑assisted cracking and hidden design flaws that weakened the structure over decades. Their analysis claims no recent overload was present.

Conversely, a report issued by the government’s Office of National Evaluation of Seismic Vulnerability and Infrastructure (Onesvie) concludes the roof gave way due to excessive weight from added layers of fin‑materials, water tanks, HVAC units and lighting, stating the load exceeded the beams’ capacity by more than 120 %. The defense counters that the government's computational model contains errors in beam spacing and load estimates, inflating the apparent overload.

The dispute directly influences pending criminal proceedings, as each explanation carries different implications for negligence and liability.
