Dominican Interior Minister Faride Raful Vows Police Reform and Accountability Amid Protests

Interior and Police Minister Faride Raful said any police officer who violates the law will face sanctions, stressing that no one in the National Police is above the law. She defended the ongoing historic reform of the police force, which includes a new Organic Police Law, stronger supervision, transparency and zero‑tolerance for misconduct. Raful rejected calls for her resignation, stating she will remain in office as long as President Luis Abinader retains confidence in her. The minister linked the reforms to recent public unrest following the shooting death of 19‑year‑old Darlin Mercado Reyes, which sparked protests demanding justice and broader social changes. Raful affirmed the government’s commitment to investigate all violations and to continue improving the institution.

The Senate’s rapid amendment of the police law was criticized by some observers as insufficient, but Raful maintained that the legislative change represents an opportunity for progressive transformation.
