Dominican Republic's TNR and Intabaco Sign Irrigation Agreement for Tobacco Sector
The National Directorate of Irrigation Technification (TNR) and the Dominican Institute of Tobacco (Intabaco) signed a cooperation agreement in Santo Domingo to modernize tobacco cultivation through advanced irrigation technologies. The pact was signed by TNR director Claudio Caamaño Vélez and Intabaco head Iván Hernández Guzmán.
The agreement calls for technical assistance, training programs and the creation of demonstration plots to showcase the economic and productivity gains of mechanized irrigation. It also includes joint evaluations of crop performance, and the design of national calls that will enable producers to access financing and subsidies via the Bagri‑Riego program together with Banco Agrícola. Both parties will promote the initiative among tobacco growers, aiming to improve water use efficiency, reduce environmental impact and strengthen the value chain of a sector that generates over US$1.3 billion in annual exports.
Officials from TNR and Intabaco, including legal and operational representatives, attended the signing ceremony.
