Dominican Republic announces Restoration Day celebrations in Santiago
The Dominican Republic's Ministry of Culture has announced a series of events to commemorate the Restoration Day, marking the anniversary of the 1863 uprising against Spanish annexation. The central event, titled ‘Concierto por la Patria’, will take place on August 16 at the Gran Teatro del Cibao in Santiago de los Caballeros. Directed by Vice Minister Amaury Sánchez, the concert will feature the Santo Domingo Philharmonic Orchestra alongside artists such as Carlos Alfredo Fatule, Adalgisa Pantaleón, and Jessy Savery.
Additional festivities include a ‘Tarde de Parque’ on August 15 at the Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration, featuring folk music, dance, and visual arts. Because the holiday falls on a Sunday in 2026, Law No. 139-97 dictates there will be no long weekend, as the holiday will not be transferred to Monday.
Historically, the Restoration War began with the ‘Grito de Capotillo’ on August 16, 1863, led by patriots such as Santiago Rodríguez to reclaim national sovereignty. While the era was marked by intense conflict between local volunteers and well-equipped Spanish forces, it ultimately led to the establishment of the Second Republic.
