Dominican Senate lawmakers recorded 103 excused absences

A review of session minutes from the Dominican Republic Senate revealed that lawmakers accumulated 103 absences accompanied by excuses during the 26 sessions held between February 27 and July 26 of the previous legislature. Notably, none of these absences were recorded as unjustified.

Senator Félix Bautista recorded the highest number of absences with 11 excuses, followed by Héctor Acosta with 10, and Ginette Bournigal with eight. Conversely, seven senators, including Senate President Ricardo de los Santos, maintained perfect attendance during the reviewed period.

Senate regulations require members to attend sessions and committee meetings punctually. While the rules allow for written excuses for specific reasons—such as illness, medical appointments, family bereavement, or official Senate representation—the high volume of excused absences has drawn scrutiny regarding the implementation of parliamentary procedures.
