Dominican sugar sector hits 70% mechanization, slashes foreign labor

Executives of the Dominican Republic's main sugar mills reported that mechanization of the sector has risen from about 1% to 70% over the past five years. The increase has boosted productivity and sharply reduced reliance on foreign workers for cane cutting.

The progress was presented to President Luis Abinader during a meeting at the Palacio Nacional, attended by representatives of Central Romana, Ingenio CAEI and Ingenio Barahona, and Minister of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs Eduardo Sanz Lovatón.
