Santiago, Dominican Republic sees public‑transport fare hike up to RD$40

Public‑transport drivers in Santiago and other towns of the Dominican Republic raised fares on at least 36 routes, adding 5 to 25 pesos per ride. The increase lifts the standard urban fare from RD$35 to RD$40 and applies to urban, inter‑urban and provincial services.

Juan Marte, president of the Confederación Nacional de Trabajadores del Transporte (CNTT), said the hikes are driven by rising operational costs, including fuel, spare parts, lubricants and maintenance, which have become unsustainable for drivers. He warned that more routes could see adjustments in the coming days if cost pressures persist.

Commuters have protested the increase, noting that wages have not kept pace with the price rise and that the higher fare adds a financial burden to thousands who rely on the service daily. The CNTT indicated it will continue monitoring costs and may consider further measures if needed.
